Indonesia now runs on screens. At the start of 2025 the country had 212 million internet users, a penetration rate of 74.6 percent, and 143 million social media identities across a population of about 285 million (DataReportal, 2025). Someone designs every one of those screens, whether a banking app, a shopping platform, a streaming service, or a government portal. That someone is increasingly a digital media designer, and demand for the role in Indonesia is now at an all-time high.
The economic backdrop explains the momentum. Indonesia's digital economy reached about US$99 billion in gross merchandise value in 2025, growing roughly 14 percent and remaining the largest in Southeast Asia (Google, Temasek, & Bain & Company, 2025). The broader creative economy, which spans design, film, music, gaming, and digital content, employed 27.40 million workers in 2025, equivalent to 18.70 percent of the national labor force and up from 26.48 million a year earlier (Badan Pusat Statistik, 2025). For a student choosing a field of study, the useful question is not whether digital design work exists, but which specific careers it leads to and how to prepare for them. This article maps those career opportunities and shows how a structured program translates into them.
Why digital media design is a strong career choice in Indonesia
The clearest signal of opportunity is the gap between demand and supply. Indonesia's digital economy is projected to need around nine million additional information and communication technology professionals by 2030, and in several regional markets, more than 75 percent of employers report that fresh graduates are not job-ready (ASEAN Business Advisory Council, 2025).
The Indonesian government has framed the same challenge as a target, stating that the country needs at least nine million digital talents by 2030, which works out to roughly 600,000 new professionals every year (Antara News, 2022). Digital media design sits squarely inside that shortfall, because trained designers must produce the interfaces, content, and experiences that the digital economy depends on.
The demand is global as well as national, which matters because design work travels easily across borders. In the United States, employment of web developers and digital designers is projected to grow 8 percent between 2023 and 2033, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 16,500 openings each year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025a).
The wider group of computer and information technology occupations is expected to grow much faster than average through 2034 and already commands a median wage well above the national figure (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025b).
The World Economic Forum (2025) reinforces this trend: while analytical thinking remains the single most valued core skill among employers, creative thinking and technological literacy are among the fastest-growing skills through 2030. A digital media designer who combines all three is precisely the profile the market is short of.
What are the career opportunities after studying digital media design in Jakarta?
Studying digital media design in Jakarta opens a broad set of roles across the visual and interactive economy. Graduates of the Digital Media Design program at Raffles Jakarta can pursue careers as an art director, digital creative director, multimedia designer, user interface designer, interactive designer, motion graphic designer, video and post-production artist, 3D graphics designer, web designer, and web developer (Raffles Jakarta, 2026a). These roles are best understood as several connected career tracks rather than a single job.
The first track is product design, covering user interface and user experience work, where designers shape how people navigate apps and websites and are hired heavily by banks, financial technology firms, and online retailers.
The second is web and application development, where design meets front-end build and where employers value designers who can also code.
The third is motion and video, including motion graphics, kinetic typography, and post production for advertising, social platforms, and streaming media.
The fourth is 3D and immersive design, including virtual reality and content for the games sector, which continues to expand particularly quickly in Indonesia (Google, Temasek, & Bain & Company, 2025).
The fifth is creative direction and multimedia content, the senior track that combines visual judgment with team leadership across brand and campaign work.
Two features of these careers deserve emphasis for a Jakarta-based student. First, the employers are everywhere: every bank, retailer, media company, agency, and government service in the country now competes for people who can create credible digital experiences.
Second, the work is borderless. A designer trained to international standards in Jakarta can serve clients in Singapore, Sydney, or elsewhere without relocating and can move between employment, agency work, and freelance practice over a career.
For a fuller discussion of why an international education strengthens that mobility, see the companion article, "The Benefits of an International Digital Media Design Education."
How the Raffles Jakarta programme maps to these careers
The Digital Media Design program at Raffles Jakarta is built to move a student from broad creative foundations into the specialized skills each career track requires.
It starts with the basics of graphic design and then moves into specialized digital fields, such as user interface and user experience design, mobile and web application development, and virtual reality, focusing on creating dynamic content supported by integrated programming (Raffles Jakarta, 2026a).
Students are also asked to research and innovate digital solutions in cultural, economic, and social contexts, which develops the judgement that separates a designer from an operator of software. The program is offered at two levels, an Advanced Diploma completed in two years and a bachelor's completed in three years of full-time study, with intakes in January, April, July, and October and instruction in English.
Teaching takes place in studios, in small classes led by practicing professionals, and on the industry-standard software and equipment used by creative and technology employers, so graduates arrive in the workplace already fluent in the relevant tools.
As part of the Raffles Education network, established in Singapore in 1990 and now spanning sixteen institutions across nine countries, students also gain access to an inter-school transfer scheme and to progression routes that carry their credentials across the region.

Prospective students can review the full program details on the Digital Media Design page and should confirm current entry requirements, which include evidence of English language proficiency, directly with the admissions team.

How artificial intelligence is reshaping digital design roles
No honest account of design careers in 2026 can ignore artificial intelligence, but the evidence points to a change in the nature of the work rather than its disappearance. According to a study by McKinsey and Company (2023), generative artificial intelligence is more about adding to the work of creative and knowledge professionals than replacing them. It takes care of routine tasks so that people can focus on more important ones.
As tools generate layouts, images, and code in seconds, the scarce and valuable capability becomes the judgment to decide which option is right, why an interface should feel a particular way, and how a design serves a business and cultural context. This conclusion is consistent with the World Economic Forum (2025) finding that creative thinking and technological literacy are rising together in importance.
The practical implication for a prospective student is that the strongest career position belongs to designers who are fluent with the new tools and trained in the human reasoning the tools cannot supply, which is precisely the combination a rigorous program is designed to build.
Career progression and earning potential
Digital media design offers a clear progression path. Most graduates begin in junior or associate roles, such as junior user interface designer, junior motion designer, or web designer, then move into mid-level and senior positions as their portfolios mature and eventually into leadership roles such as art director, design manager, or creative director. Because the field rewards demonstrable ability, a strong portfolio often matters as much as the credential itself, which is why studio-based education that produces real project work is valuable.
Earnings vary widely by market, employer, and specialization, and Indonesian salaries differ from those in higher-cost economies, so figures should be read as direction rather than promise. As an international benchmark, the median annual wage for web developers and digital designers in the United States was about US$98,090, and the broader technology occupation group carried a median above the national average (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025a, 2025b).
The consistent pattern across markets is that digital design roles pay above the general average and that demand is projected to keep growing, which supports a favorable long-term outlook for graduates who continue to develop their skills.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What jobs can you get with a digital media design qualification?
A digital media design qualification leads to roles including user interface designer, user experience designer, interactive designer, motion graphic designer, web designer, web developer, multimedia designer, 3D graphics designer, video and post-production artist, art director, and creative director (Raffles Jakarta, 2026a). These span product design, web and application development, motion and video, immersive and 3D work, and creative leadership.
Is digital media design a good career in Indonesia?
Yes. Indonesia has the largest digital economy in Southeast Asia, valued at about US$99 billion in 2025 (Google, Temasek, & Bain & Company, 2025), and a creative economy that employed 27.40 million workers in the same year (Badan Pusat Statistik, 2025). With the country projected to need around nine million additional digital professionals by 2030, trained designers are in strong demand (ASEAN Business Advisory Council, 2025).
What is the difference between digital media design and visual communication design?
Digital media design focuses on interactive and screen-based work, including user interface and user experience design, motion graphics, web and application development, and virtual reality. Visual communication design focuses on the broader field of visual and brand communication, including graphic design, illustration, and packaging. Raffles Jakarta offers both, so applicants can choose according to whether their interest is primarily interactive or primarily visual.
Do you need a degree to work in digital design?
A formal qualification is not always mandatory, because employers weigh portfolios heavily, but structured study remains the most reliable route into the profession.
