Attention is the scarce resource

The primary data originates from Beverly Serrell's 1997 research, which analyzed the time spent and distribution of visitors across 108 exhibitions and created two numerical indices that remain relevant today (Serrell, 1997). The initial metric is the sweep rate index, determined by dividing the exhibition's floor space by the average duration visitors engage with it.

A typical museum visitor speed is approximately 300 square feet per minute, with a reduced sweep rate indicating that visitors are spending more time (Serrell, 1998; Yalowitz & Bronnenkant, 2009). Significantly, he ascribed it primarily to inadequately constructed displays that necessitated undue physical exertion to observe, exemplifying the phenomenon with a visitor struggling to view items situated in elevated or recessed cases (Gilman, 1916).

Each design choice influences one aspect of that ratio. Advantages increase with significance, originality, lucidity, emotional impact, and the assurance of valuable knowledge.

Expenses increase due to physical exertion, obstructed visibility, convoluted text, overcrowding, uncertainty regarding the next steps, and the perception that participation will require more time than it merits.

The panel elucidates results that would otherwise appear random. Introductory panels are frequently neglected, but visitor engagement and results significantly enhance when they are perused (Serrell, 2010).

The panel is not malfunctioning due to a lack of curiosity among visitors. It is unsuccessful due to the perceived expenditure of effort and time outweighing its advantages.


Experience begins before arrival and continues after departure

The second significant framework is derived from John Falk and Lynn Dierking, who presented the Interactive Experience Model, subsequently referred to as the Contextual Model of Learning, in The Museum Experience published in 1992 (Falk & Dierking, 1992).

The journey begins when someone first thinks about going and continues long after they leave the event (Falk & Dierking, 1992).

This process incorporates arrival sequence, orientation, wayfinding, signage, and the return journey into the design brief. Subsequent studies validated that architectural elements such as illumination, density, hue, acoustics, and spatial arrangement subtly affect visitor education, while the arrangement, placement, and material of exhibits and labels directly influence results (Falk & Storksdieck, 2005).


The design levers that actually move the numbers

Several interventions recur across the literature.

Orientation. Visitors who understand the structure of what they are entering make better decisions about where to spend time. Circulation, orientation, and wayfinding formed the focus of extensive research by Bitgood and colleagues at Jacksonville State University across the 1980s and beyond (Yalowitz & Bronnenkant, 2009).

Sequence and rhythm. If satiation rather than exhaustion drives decline, the remedy is variation in intensity across the route rather than uniform density.

The truthful interpretation is that immersion operates via attention rather than in lieu of it. An exhibition rich in sensory elements will falter like a wall of dense text if it demands effort without offering perceived advantages.

Exhibition design possesses a notably robust tradition of evaluation, originating from the systematic observation of museum patrons conducted by Melton and Robinson in the late 1920s and 1930s (Robinson, 1928, as referenced in Yalowitz & Bronnenkant, 2009).

The fundamental approach continues to be timing and tracking, with the literature providing practical instructions for its implementation (Yalowitz & Bronnenkant, 2009). Serrell subsequently focused on consolidating tracking and timing information from various exhibitions to create standards for comprehensive application (Serrell, 2020).

Contemporary techniques perpetuate the identical rationale. Scholars examined visitor conduct at the Louver through Bluetooth data to investigate sequential movement beyond the capacity of manual observation (Yoshimura et al., 2016), and recent studies have advocated for frameworks that encompass the diverse interactions of visitors during pauses, which established protocols failed to document (Pierroux, 2024).

The common thread throughout the century is clear: exhibition specialists assess visitor behavior and subsequently tailor their designs based on the findings.

Why this matters in Indonesia

Three regional factors render exhibition proficiency advantageous in this context. Indonesia's museum and heritage sector possesses vast collections with inconsistent interpretations, and the disparity between possessing artifacts and conveying their significance is precisely what exhibition design addresses. Utilizing attention value thinking in a national collection presents a significant professional opportunity.

The market for commercial exhibitions is even more expansive. Jakarta organizes substantial trade fairs, expos, and brand activation events, where identical principles dictate results, yet the emphasis is placed on leads and sales instead of education. The creative economy is projected to generate a demand base, employing 27.4 million individuals by 2025, which constitutes approximately 18.7 percent of the national labor force, with over half of its employees being under the age of 40 (Badan Pusat Statistik, 2025; Antara, 2025).

Younger demographics come equipped with anticipations influenced by immersive experiences, thereby elevating the benchmarks for all creators catering to them.

Exhibition design occupies a space among various skills, which is why it is incorporated into interior design education rather than being taught as an independent discipline. It necessitates proficiency in spatial design, as circulation, sightlines, and sequence are architectural choices.

It necessitates a comprehension of human attention and cognition, as the complete body of evidence comes from psychology. It necessitates dialog and editorial discernment, as labels and interpretations convey the substance. It necessitates evaluation literacy, as the professional benchmark involves assessing visitor behavior instead of presuming it.
